What Appreciates

i build the machines. i want to say that first so you know where this comes from. i build autonomous agents at amazon that do the work of whole teams and i am good at it and i believe in it. that part is true.

but there is another thing that is true.

the machines will win at production. they already have. every day i watch them get better at the thing everyone said mattered most — output, speed, volume — and every day i become more certain that none of that is where value lives anymore.

here is what i think. in ten years nobody will ask who made the most. they will ask who meant it.

i have a list. it is not a framework or a thesis. it is just the things i keep noticing hold their weight. the things that do not get cheaper as everything else does.

presence. being in a room and being in it fully. not with half your mind somewhere else. not optimizing the moment. just being there. i am bad at this. most people are bad at this. that is why it is worth more than almost anything else you could offer someone.

taste. not preference. the algorithm handles preference. taste is what you refuse. it is looking at everything available and choosing one thing and standing behind the choice. it costs nothing to make things now. it costs everything to choose well.

the body. a meal made slowly. hands in soil. cold water. the weight of another person against you. the physical world does not scale. good.

being seen. not being followed. not engagement. one person who knows you and sits with you and does not need you to perform. the machine can personalize anything. it cannot know you.

shared ritual. the same people at the same table. not because it is efficient. because it is a thing you chose to keep doing and the keeping is the point.

nature. it was here before us. it will not optimize for us. you cannot make it faster or bigger or more. stand in front of the ocean and try to 10x it. that is the whole lesson.

the premium moves. i am watching it move. it goes from information to meaning. from output to attention. from cleverness to soul.

this is not sentimental. it is economic. when production is free the scarce thing wins. and the scarce things now are the things that require a body. a commitment. a choice to show up.

i work in ai because it is the most powerful thing i will see in my lifetime.

i write here because the most important question is not how to use it. it is what to protect from it.

not out of fear.

out of taste.
